Your Word Is Not a Small Thing

Jul 15, 2026 | Leadership Development

I want to bring you back to your word.

Most people hear the word integrity and think of character, principles, or morality. That is not what I am talking about here. I am talking about whether you are your word.

When you say you are going to do something, do you do it? And if you are not going to do it, do you communicate that? Do you recreate the agreement? Or do you just let it sit there and hope it goes away?

We all have things that slip. We all make commitments with good intentions, and then life happens. I am not saying you have to be perfect. I am saying that when you give your word, something gets created. Someone may organize around it. They may make a decision based on it. They may be waiting on you.

When your word becomes casual, you become casual with your ability to create.

You can tell yourself that the thing was small. Maybe it was. But if you keep subtracting from your word, over time you have less access to yourself as someone who can create anything meaningful. People stop trusting and acting on what you say. More importantly, you stop trusting what you say, become more loose, and your own significance shrinks. So take a look this week. Where do you have something incomplete? Where did you say you would call, send, show up, handle, or decide something, and you have not done it?

Do not make yourself wrong. Just handle it. Complete it, recreate it, or clean it up. Give someone a new agreement they can actually organize around.

That is what it looks like to be your word.

This is also a place where bringing a team or a partnership through the course can make a real difference. When people share a language around agreements, integrity, and what it means to be their word, they can create a different kind of culture together. Our next Create Powerful Course is September 8–12.
